Karyn Foster,
PR Magnate and Philanthopist
Karyn Foster, the force behind Adelaide’s leading PR firm, Foster PR, built a fabulous career. Her boundless energy, quick wit, and unparalleled work ethic set her apart in a male-dominated industry. Karyn’s story as a PR magnate and philanthopist, is nothing short of inspirational.
Karyn defied gender bias to establish Foster PR at just 24, Adelaide’s first female PR agency. While male partnerships were offered, Karyn boldly charted her own path, a decision that proved right for four decades. She transformed her business from a solo operation into a thriving venture through calculated risks and hard work.
Karyn’s achievements are incredible. She learned from retail giants like Westfield, Myer, Carla Zampatti and Max Mara. Her expertise extended into hospitality, promoting destinations like Club Med, Hayman Island, The Hilton, The Hyatt, and Queensland Tourism.
It was in retail Karyn first met Melinda, who modelled while pursuing three uni degrees. Karyn makes the comment “I only ever chose the best and brightest models’. Melinda’s response to this was “and I was absolutely both terrified and in awe of you!”
Karyn’s support continued and was pivotal when Melinda went on to establish her female-led, full-service creative agency in 2000. Melinda’s vision, Oranje Creative, is committed to providing a voice for women in the traditionally male-dominated advertising industry by challenging stereotypes, and pushing boundaries. Karyn’s mentorship and guidance during Melinda’s early campaign pitches were invaluable, and Oranje later collaborated with Karyn, who refers to Melinda as ‘my asset.’
Karyn’s career was not just about work; it was an adventure filled with interactions with entertainment legends like Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Sting, and many more. She embraced diverse projects, from entertainment acts to sporting events featuring legends like Ian Botham and Viv Richards.
Events and crowds became her second nature, whether at the Adelaide Fringe, the Adelaide Festival of Arts, or various productions, breakfasts, balls and launches. Karyn’s energy seemed boundless.
Karyn worked with a diverse portfolio of clients, including BHP, AMP, SGIC, TAB, Channel 10, Foxtel, and others. Her passion for hospitality shone through collaborations with restaurants and beverage businesses.
Beyond her business acumen, Karyn is a dedicated philanthropist. Her involvement in numerous boards and charities, from the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to the Olympic and Commonwealth Games Appeals, underscored her commitment to giving back.
Karyn’s unique approach and innovative thinking set her destination to success. A journey totally inspiring for women of her generation and generations to come.
What a woman. What a lot to live up to.
